Due to the addictive nature of opioids and corticosteroids, scientists have been searching for an alternative to traditional fibromyalgia medications for years. Fibromyalgia, also known as Fibrositis, is very common in the U.S. - affecting over 3 million each year. Symptoms include widespread muscle pain and tenderness accompanied by mood swings, fatigue, altered sleep, and even memory loss. Being that CBD is non-addictive, ongoing studies have suggested it as a plausible replacement for more traditional drugs.
In 2011, a study was conducted that focused on CBD treatment strictly for fibromyalgia. The data produced extremely promising results for possible future treatment methods. The research included 56 participants. Half used CBD while the other half continued using traditional methods as treatment. The participants using cannabis saw a huge reduction in overall symptoms and pain. Not much improvement was observed in the participants using traditional methods.
