FAQs
What exactly is a moisturizer?
Moisturizers, also known as emollients, are mixtures of oil and water with some other ingredients that help support moisture in your skin. Moisturizers help to create a barrier on top of your skin to keep water and good stuff in and keep bad things out. Moisturizers help keep your skin hydrated and protect against premature aging in the skin as well.
Is there more than just one kind of moisturizer?
There are actually three kinds of moisturizers that are used to help your skin stay hydrated.
- Emollients: These are oil-based moisturizers that are designed to help rebuild lost lipids in the skin while also hydrating.
- Humectants: This kind of moisturizer draws moisture (water) from the environment into your skin and seals it in.
- Occlusives: These act as a physical barrier for your skin to prevent water loss. These can be wax, silicone, or oil-based and tend to be very thick.
Do I really need to moisturize?
For a majority of people, yes. If you are someone who is cleansing your skin every day, exfoliating to slough off the dead skin cells, or applying a clay mask to your face like our Exfoliating Face Mask, you are stripping your skin of its natural oils on the daily and therefore you need to replenish them by using a moisturizer.
How often should I apply a moisturizer?
It is a good practice to apply a moisturizer twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. This should be done right after you get out of the shower to lock in moisture or at the end of your skin care routine to bring your skin the moisture it needs to replenish its barrier.
