What Are the Benefits of CBD and Lidocaine Cream?

Simply put, lidocaine cream can provide temporary pain relief from aching muscles and joints when applied topically. Adding the benefits of CBD, such as supporting recovery from exercise or strenuous work, puts another layer on these pain-relief creams.

Does lidocaine cream work differently than other pain relief topicals? Do the properties of CBD enhance lidocaine’s pain-killing power?

We’ll answer those questions and more as we dive into how lidocaine and the added benefits of CBD oil can help active people reach their health goals.

What is Lidocaine Cream?

If you’ve ever tweaked a knee, strained your back, or pulled a muscle, you’ve probably hobbled around the drug store looking for something to help. Of course, oral ibuprofen is always a good option. But it’s also nice to apply a pain-relieving cream, gel, or patch directly to the spot that’s bothering you.

Lidocaine cream works differently than most topical pain relievers. Most are counterirritants, like menthol, which effectively distract you from the pain you feel. On the other hand, lidocaine cream is a local anesthetic or painkiller that you can apply directly to your skin. It works similarly to other numbing agents, like novocaine, by disrupting pain signals between nerves.

But lidocaine doesn’t heal injuries or otherwise treat the underlying problem that causes your joints or muscles to ache. It just provides temporary relief from the pain you feel.

There are lidocaine gels and sprays intended for use on problems like sunburn, scrapes, and other kinds of skin irritation. But the Florida Medical Clinic advises against the use of lidocaine for sunburn since it can irritate damaged skin. And they probably know a thing or two about it. They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing.

For the purposes of this article, we’re really talking about lidocaine for muscle soreness or joint discomfort. You can get lidocaine cream over the counter (OTC) at your local drug store or grocery store pharmacy. The strongest OTC lidocaine creams contain four percent lidocaine.

There are only a few lidocaine cream side effects when it’s used as directed, and these mainly consist of skin irritations. If you have sensitive skin, you can try a very small amount before applying the full recommended amount.

What are the Benefits of CBD in Topicals?

Lidocaine cream is great for temporary pain relief. But what about CBD?

The benefits of CBD are more difficult to discuss. Federal regulations on CBD marketing limit what companies can say about their products.

Researchers still have a lot of work to do on how to use CBD for pain relief and how effective it is. Most of the completed research on CBD and pain are pre-clinical laboratory studies. And human research on the subject is mostly limited to small case studies or reviews. So we’re still waiting on the final word.

As a result, regulators have not yet approved CBD for pain relief.

However, we know that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, an array of cellular receptors found throughout the body. CBD seems to interact most efficiently with CB2 receptors, which appear to have a role in immune responses. As a result, it makes sense that CBD could play a role in the body’s recovery from strenuous work.

There are plenty of positive stories from fitness enthusiasts and pro athletes who make CBD part of their exercise recovery routines. Some prefer to take oral CBD products, like tinctures or capsules. Others use topical creams, gels, and sprays. And quite a few combat sports athletes rave about the results they experience when using CBD bath bombs after tough training days.

Do Lidocaine and CBD Work Well Together?

Lidocaine creams have been a go-to topical pain reliever for many years, but the addition of CBD's benefits is a new development. The two substances seem to complement each other well in topical formulas. But that doesn’t necessarily mean one enhances the other's effect.

Still, in the context of exercise and fitness, lidocaine cream for pain relief with CBD for exercise recovery only makes sense. If you train hard or have a physically demanding job, you will inevitably experience occasional muscle soreness or aching joints. It just comes with the territory, and recovery is especially important.

You simply can’t perform your best at work or in the gym when you’re uncomfortable. So while a lidocaine cream with CBD won’t repair the knees you’ve strained for years, it can provide the support you need to get through the day.

But lidocaine cream with CBD isn’t a magical potion. Instead, it complements a broader recovery routine that includes plenty of sleep, the right supplements, alternating exercise days, a balanced diet, and advice from your doctor.

cbdMD Relieve: Lidocaine Cream with CBD

We recently released an innovative take on lidocaine cream with our new cbdMD Premium Relieve topical.

It’s less cream and more like a light liquid that combines maximum-strength lidocaine (four percent) with cbdMD’s Superior Broad Spectrum hemp extract formula in your choice of concentration. It’s available in a roller or spray applicator, so it’s easy to apply anywhere you need it.

And thanks to the applicators, you won’t feel the effects of lidocaine on your hands either. That’s important if you use it during work, exercise, or playing your favorite sport. You wouldn’t want your seven iron to go flying off into a pond because your hands are numb.

Along with the liquid CBD and lidocaine cream, cbdMD Relieve also features chamomile, cucumber, and aloe extracts to soothe your skin.

Let’s look at the two different applicators to see what makes them unique.

cbdMD Relieve with Roll-on Applicator

If you’ve tried our award-winning cbdMD Freeze roller with menthol, you know how great the roll-on applicator works for applying a pain-relief topical. It’s the perfect companion to the briefcase, toolbox, purse, or gym bag you use every day.

Relieve works the same way. Simply twist off the cap and use the roll-on applicator to apply a thin layer of the lidocaine-CBD liquid to the area where you need it.

One of the only downsides to the Relieve Roller is that it’s not really meant for sharing since you put the applicator directly on your skin. So if you want something you can pass around to your friends and family, you’ll want to consider the next option. It’s also difficult to reach some parts of your back with a roller unless someone can help apply it.

cbdMD Relieve Spray

This is the option that people are particularly excited about. Our spray applicator for cbdMD Relieve makes it easy to reach almost any part of our body without help from others. That’s thanks to a relatively new technology.

In the past, spray cans contained the product and propellant in the same space. That means whatever was in the can could become contaminated by whatever substance they used to pressurize the can.

But our Relieve spray works differently. The liquid CBD and lidocaine cream is held in an FDA-approved, laminated aluminum bag while compressed air fills the space between the bag and aluminum outer can. That means there’s no mixing between the propellant (in this case, air) and the product itself.

It also means the product dispenses properly, even when you hold the can upside down.

How to Use cbdMD Relieve

The directions for cbdMD Relieve are similar to other lidocaine cream topicals you might have seen.

Just apply a thin layer of the product to the affected area. If you get any on your hands, just wash it off with cool water (unless you’re applying it to your hands, of course). You can use cbdMD Relieve up to four times a day, as needed.

Just make sure you don’t use a liquid lidocaine cream like cbdMD Relieve near your eyes or mucous membranes – such as those around your mouth and nose.

You should also avoid using it on blistered, broken, or raw skin.

CBD and Lidocaine Cream in Your Daily Routine

While it’s important to understand the directions for how to use a CBD and lidocaine cream, it’s also important to understand how you can integrate it into your work or exercise routine.

For now, we’re going to concentrate specifically on how a lidocaine cream with added CBD can enhance your routine. For more CBD specific information, check out this article on how to add CBD to your daily regimen, much like you would with vitamins and other supplements.

First, you can use a lidocaine cream with added CBD anytime you feel joint or muscle discomfort. So if you do physical labor every day and need relief from minor aches, lidocaine is a good option.

But what if you play sports or enjoy exercise? How should you use lidocaine cream as part of your recovery routine?

First, you should note that serious joint or muscle pain during workouts could indicate that you’ve sustained a serious injury. If that’s the case, you should speak with your doctor. He or she may advise time away from certain activities, so your body can heal. You may also require surgery to solve the problem.

If you experience minor discomfort during or after exercise, you can use a lidocaine cream before or after your workout session. You should also allow time for rest and recovery. For instance, if you enjoy running but experience minor ankle soreness, you may need to spend at least three or four days per week doing non-running exercise. A lower-impact leg exercise, like an elliptical machine or stationary bicycle, is also an option.

Lidocaine cream with CBD can also help those who have trouble getting to sleep due to minor back and neck aches. Good sleep (and plenty of it) is crucial to athletic recovery, which is why many athletes also use CBD and melatonin sleep aids alongside topical pain relievers.

Are There Alternatives to Lidocaine Cream?

There are a lot of options for topical pain relief products. Some contain menthol, which causes a cooling sensation. There are also creams that use capsaicin for a warm feeling and histamine dihydrochloride.

These OTC topical pain relievers rely in part on an effect called counterirritation. By creating a sensation on your skin, they distract your brain from the discomfort you’re feeling deeper in your muscles or joints. And they’re quite effective.

If lidocaine cream doesn’t work for you, you can try cbdMD Freeze with menthol or cbdMD Recover with histamine dihydrochloride as part of your recovery routine after work or play.

Both come highly recommended by athletes in a wide range of sports.
