What is Hyaluronic Acid and Why It's Important to Skin Care?
Earlier, we were thrilled to give you an overview of our new cbdMD Botanicals line of CBD skin care products. These products combine our broad spectrum CBD formula with a range of herbal ingredients to provide the best in natural skin care. But maybe you noticed that one ingredient we mentioned didn’t sound very herbal: hyaluronic acid.
It’s true that hyaluronic acid isn’t herbal. And it’s also true that the word “acid” may evoke memories of upset stomachs or Bond villains. But nature is actually full of acids that are important to your body’s health – including on your skin’s.
So here’s a quick rundown on what hyaluronic acid is and the benefits of hyaluronic acid for skin care. We’ll also show you the three special cbdMD Botanicals products that deploy its unique powers.
What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the human body, especially in the fluids of the eyes and joints. Fluid retention is one of its main jobs, and it’s astoundingly good at it: scientists have found that hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It also has a key role in wound repair.
Since it first hit the market in the 1970s, hyaluronic acid has been used as an aid to eye surgery. Injecting it into arthritic joints also seems to ease pain. But it was only more recently that scientists started to grasp what hyaluronic acid does for skin.
It turns out that hyaluronic acid – or rather the lack of it – is a crucial part of the skin’s aging process. Hyaluronic acid helps hold moisture in your skin just like it does everywhere else. But as you get older your supply of it shrinks, and your skin slowly dries out. And the dryness is one (though not the only) contributor to the wrinkles and cracking that come with age.
Hyaluronic Acid Skin Care Products
From all that, you can probably guess the benefits hyaluronic acid brings to skin care products. The vegetable or mineral oils in skin creams help seal in moisture by mimicking your skin’s own natural oil. But oil alone isn’t enough. Hyaluronic acid is a critical part of moisture retention, and it works perfectly with your body because it’s already in your body.
Applying hyaluronic acid also helps keep moisture at the surface of the skin. That in turn keeps skin looking plump and reduces the appearance of fine lines and other signs of dryness. And because every single person has it already, hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types.
With all these benefits in mind, we’ve chosen to include hyaluronic acid in three of our products designed for extra hydrating power. These are:
- Fountain of Youth Dynamic Serum: This hyaluronic acid serum blends CBD, vitamin C, and jojoba oil (another handy substance for aging skin that we’ll dive into tomorrow). Spreading a few drops on your face right after washing will keep your complexion fresh and glowing.
- Adore Me Eye & Lip Cream: The thin skin on the lips and around the eyes can get extra dry with age or cold weather. So our special cream includes hyaluronic acid and jojoba oil along with CBD and a blend of vitamins with antioxidant powers to keep skin healthy.
- Heavenly Hydration Facial Lotion: A good daily moisturizer enhanced with argan oil and apricot oil along with hyaluronic acid and CBD. It’s especially good for a morning skincare routine, sealing in moisture before you apply makeup.
The basics of hyaluronic acid are simple. Its a natural part of your body that's a great hydrator, especially for mature skin. But anyone who wants to keep their skin supple and smooth should give it a try. There's a good reason its a prominent ingredient in so many skin care products.
