What Are CBD Dog Treats?
That one’s easy! If you already know how to make dog treats at home, simply add some CBD for dogs right into the recipe and voila – CBD dog treats! Or, you could give your dog a regular dog treat and drizzle their daily serving of CBD doggie tinctures right onto the treat. There are many CBD dog treat recipes online in which you can use your dog’s brand of CBD or tweak the recipe to their preference.
In short, CBD dog treats are dog treats of any kind with CBD either in them or served on top of them.
Why, you might ask? Because your dog’s treats are opportunities for yummy goodness – but also for some pretty awesome health and wellness benefits! Why not give them both?
Benefits of CBD
CBD dog treats are a great way to provide the benefits of CBD in a wholesome dog treat. Making them yourself means that you can control what ingredients you put in with those wonderful CBD benefits. How to Make Dog Treats with CBD for Dogs
To begin, you’ll want to find a simple dog treat recipe and choose healthy ingredients. You can substitute CBD dog peanut butter for regular peanut butter, or add in some CBD dog tinctures to the recipe.
Recipes for CBD Dog Treats
How to make dog treats with CBD is easy with CBD dog treat recipes like these:
No-Bake Peanut Butter and Oat Balls (super easy!)
Ingredients:
- ⅔ cup plain pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
- ½ cup CBD peanut butter
- 2 cups oats
Blend together in a food processor or stir together in a bowl the pumpkin, peanut butter, and 1½ cups oats, and then roll into balls and coat in the remaining oats. Refrigerate until firm and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Peanut Butter & Banana Biscuits
Ingredients:
- 2 mashed, ripe bananas (about 1 cup mashed banana)
- ½ cup CBD peanut butter
- 4 cups oat flour or rolled oats ground up in the blender
Combine all ingredients and bake at 325℉ for about 25 minutes until biscuits are a nice golden brown.
Baked Sweet Potato & Coconut Oil Treats
Ingredients:
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, cooked and cooled
- ½ cup coconut flour
- ½ cup coconut oil (or you can use bacon grease if you prefer)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp CBD Oil for Dogs (natural flavor)
- 1 to 2 Tbsp water
Preheat the oven to 350℉. Mash the sweet potatoes. Hand mix with remaining ingredients until well combined. You can add in a little extra coconut flour if you want to adjust the consistency. It should be a nice doughy texture. If it’s too dry, adjust with a small amount of water (less than 1 tsp).
Shape the mixture into one-inch-diameter balls and then flatten the balls with a spoon or by hand. Place evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 18-20 minutes.
Let cool before serving. Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
You can also make some great frozen treats for your dog if they are a fan of ice cream or frozen yogurts. Using pop-out silicone molds and this easy video you can learn how to make dog treats that are a refreshing blueberry flavor – and with CBD!
How to Use Your Homemade CBD Dog Treats
CBD dog treats are easy to use for your dog. You can:
- Give your pup a CBD dog treat to start their day off on the right paw.
- Give your dog a CBD dog treat before they have to do something uncomfortable – like go to the vet or endure a storm. (Some dogs really hate storms!)
- If your dog has difficulty being separated from you, you can give them a CBD doggie treat before you have to leave.
- Give your dog a CBD dog treat before bedtime.
Important Information about How to Make Dog Treats with CBD
Safety: Avoid Xylitol
Xylitol is commercially made as a sugar substitute and is in some brands of peanut butter, a common ingredient in homemade dog treats. Always check to be sure there is no xylitol in the ingredients list as it is extremely toxic to dogs.
Cooking with CBD Oil
It’s perfectly fine to cook with CBD oil in your baked recipes. But you do need to know a little about the carrier oil in which the CBD is formulated. These carrier oils may have different cooking temperatures they can tolerate. For example, cbdMD uses MCT oil in their pet CBD oil tinctures, which has a cooking temperature tolerance of up to 350℉.
Storing Your Dog’s CBD Treats
Most of your dog’s baked goods should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and used within a week. For frozen treats, store them in an airtight freezer-safe container in the freezer. These will last much longer in the freezer, but likely your pup will finish them off within the week as well!
How Many Dog Treats Should My Dog Eat?
Use your best discretion here. Sensibly, your dog shouldn’t eat the entire batch in one sitting. It’s not the end of the world if they do but you may want to call your vet just in case. Let the vet know how much CBD was in the batch and how much of it your dog consumed. It’s not likely to harm them, but they could experience some tummy issues or grogginess.
Giving your pet one to three treats is more reasonable and you should consider their size and other dietary needs as well. They may love those peanut butter balls – but they still need to eat their dinner.
